Karthikayani is a female sloth bear that has been living at the Agra Bear Rescue Facility ever since Wildlife SOS rescued her during an anti-poaching operation in Uttar Pradesh seven years ago when she was just two months old. At that time, she weighed 2.9 kilos.
Now seven years old and weighing approximately 95 kilos, this playful resident of Agra Bear Rescue Facility can almost always be seen roaming about with her three closest bear buddies, Suri, Giri and Chintu. Despite being this active and loving to play, she is scared of most of the other bears and generally chooses to avoid any unnecessary contact with them. Luckily though, she hasn’t made any enemies in her enclosure and rarely gets into a fight. She maintains the same approach to the keepers at the Agra Bear Rescue Facility as she does with her fellow bears, and will try to intimidate her caretakers when they are around.
Karthikayani loves bamboo logs enrichments and spends hours playing with them when it isn’t too hot to be outside. Otherwise she can be seen lolling about in a hammock or snoozing in her den. This furry introvert even takes her treats into her den before eating them so that she can enjoy them alone. Her current favourite snacks are fruits, especially juicy watermelon and papayas. However, unlike many of the bears in our care, Karthikayani does not rush straight to her den during feeding time, and will usually take her time with her meals. In fact, more often than not, she is the last bear to enter the dens during feeding hours.
Karthikayani is allowed to be however she pleases while at the Agra Bear Rescue Facility and is showing great improvement since her arrival. She is now a healthy happy bear and owes this fabulous recovery and wonderful new life to donors like you.
