As more and more bears from across the country began to be turned in by their owners, we realized we had a need for a bear rescue center in eastern India.
In yet another groundbreaking partnership, this time with the West Bengal State Government, the Purulia Centre was born. Roja, pictured above, was the first bear to call this center home. Today, our smallest center takes care of the least number of bears but is just as important as the other Sanctuaries.
Here, we not only care for the bears for the rest of their lives, but also provide support for the Kalandar families who live in this part of the country. It sits on 10 acres of beautiful forest land and is capable of caring for up to 25 bears.
