Background history: The elephants that come under our care usually suffer from malnourishment and emaciation but when we saw Laxmi, we were shocked to see an elephant with such mismanaged weight. Laxmi was a begging elephant in Maharashtra, whose life was a tiring routine of walking on unnatural stone surfaces and being fed sweets and fried food. When Laxmi was brought to Wildlife SOS Elephant Conservation and Care Centre, our veterinarians were worried about how her weight adversely affecting her internal organs and limbs.
