With the planet facing the escalating challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, habitat loss, pollution and overflowing waste, it’s time to commit to actions that ensure a healthier environment for all.

This World Environment Day on June 5, the spotlight is on plastic. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) leads #BeatPlasticPollution campaign for this year’s theme, calling on communities across the globe to take charge — not just by raising awareness, but by taking action. Let’s take this day as an opportunity to revisit eco-friendly practices and make them our resolutions! Here are six fun, practical, and powerful ways to protect our environment so that we and the precious wildlife of this planet can thrive:

1. Ditch Plastic, Embrace Reusables

Plastic is like an unwelcome guest who refuses to leave — it lingers for centuries, showing up in every corner of our planet. The problem is that they exist in tonnes. Plastics are non-biodegradable, and eventually break down into pieces called microplastics that are less than 5 mm. These can unfortunately reach the deepest parts of the ocean or even drift into the stratosphere. Even smaller than them are nanoplastics that have managed to enter our bloodstreams (Gasp!). Animals, both aquatic and terrestrial, often mistake plastic for food. They choke on it and even get entangled in it.

What Can You Do?

  • Carry reusable water bottles and cloth bags.
  • Refuse single-use plastic cutlery, straws, and packaging.
  • Creatively upcycle and reuse plastic items like boxes or containers.
  • Join local clean-up drives and nature walks with a purpose!

2. Travel Mindfully, Travel Ethically

Travelling creates memories that stay with us forever, but irresponsible tourism can leave lasting scars on the very places and animals we cherish. Captive elephants, for example, often endure chronic stress, poor living conditions, and shortened lifespans in the name of entertainment or tourist rides. During wildlife safaris or treks, being sensitive to the homes of birds and animals, where we are guests, allows them to carry on their routine activities without disturbance. Going closer to or clicking pictures of bird nests, no matter how curious we are, might scare the parent birds into abandoning their abode, or make it easier for predators to spot where exactly they are. True travel isn’t just about exploring new places — it’s also about respecting and protecting what makes these places special.

What Can You Do?

3. Encourage Human-Animal Coexistence

As the urban concrete jungles encroach further into forests, wildlife often finds its way into our lanes. Instead of panicking or causing harm to them, we must stay calm, take precautions, and call rescue professionals to ensure both human and animal safety. Festivals, too, can have unintended consequences — kite flying, for example, is a traditional activity during Makar Sankranti, but lesser is known on how kite strings (manjha) can severely injure or kill birds. Firecrackers contribute significantly to air pollution, releasing harmful toxins and particulate matter into the atmosphere. Moreover, the residual debris from crackers often ends up being eaten by animals, leading to severe health complications or even death.

What Can You Do?

  • Pledge to protect green spaces that offer shelter, food and nesting spaces for urban animals.
  • Celebrate festivals with sensitivity to wildlife and the planet.
  • In case you encounter an injured or trapped wild animal, reach out to the nearest wildlife authorities immediately.

4. ‘Rewild for Wildlife’

With India losing 2.33 million hectares of tree cover since 2000, planting native trees is essential to combat desertification, water scarcity, and habitat loss. Trees support wildlife and create resilient ecosystems. Trees and shrubs also cool down cities, improve air quality, and provide shelter for countless species.

What Can You Do?

  • Participate in tree plantation drives and choose native species.
  • Plant native flowers in your gardens to attract bees, butterflies, and birds that are crucial pollinators.
  • Treat every tree you plant as a lifetime commitment — nurture it and ensure its survival for the years to come.
  • Every tree promises a greener, thriving future. Click here to contribute towards Wildlife SOS’s tree plantation projects!

5. Contribute Your Time, Skills, or Resources

“But what can I do? I’m just one person…,” said 8 billion people.

Your time, skills, and small, consistent contributions can make a big difference for wildlife. Even adopting greener technologies can help protect wildlife and their habitats.

What Can You Do?

  • Visit wildlife organisations and sanctuaries where rescued animals are given care.
  • Volunteer with wildlife rescue organisations.
  • Make a donation to trusted organisations that work towards wildlife conservation.

6. Spread Awareness!

Sharing educational content or debunking myths about animals is a step that can create a ripple effect and have a profound impact on our urban environments. Social media campaigns play a crucial role in spreading knowledge about wildlife and mobilising volunteers across India. Your voice matters — each post, rescue story, and insight you share amplifies the mission of wildlife conservation.

What Can You Do?

  • Share wildlife rescue stories to spread awareness.
  • Bust myths about animals (No, snakes don’t drink milk!).
  • Follow organisations like Wildlife SOS on social media platforms for the latest updates!

Wildlife SOS is on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube! We share awareness posts to spark conversations, inspire action, and encourage the conservation movement!

This year, let’s promise not just to hope for change, but to be the change.

Change doesn’t need grand gestures — it thrives on our awareness and the  actions we take. Whether it is about refusing a plastic bag, planting a tree, or sharing an inspiring wildlife rescue story, it contributes to a large cause that is urgent. These simple actions can collectively build a wave of change, inspiring others to adopt eco-friendly practices and contribute to safeguarding our planet’s wildlife.

Let this World Environment Day be a celebration of our shared commitment to protecting  the environment on which all lives depend on, including ours.
