As more and more bears from across the country began to be turned in by their owners, we realised we needed a bear rescue centre in eastern India as well. A new rescue centre was established as more and more Kalandar families started surrendering their bears, and more space was needed to establish a unit for long-term care.
Wildlife SOS entered into a partnership with the West Bengal state government and the West Bengal Bear Rescue Centre (WBBRC) was born. WBBRC sits on 10 acres of beautiful forest land and it provides long-term care not only for the bears, but also supports the Kalandar families still living in this part of the country.
