Background: Manu spent his life as a blind ‘begging’ elephant, forced to walk long distances and perform in ceremonies. Years of neglect left him visually impaired, malnourished, and with severe joint damage and infections. His health suddenly failed, causing him to collapse and remain lying on the ground for over 36 hours. Wildlife SOS stepped in with urgent on-site treatment, using crane support and slings to help him stand again. | READ MORE ABOUT MANU
MANU’S STORY
Manu had to bear a life of hardship. Forced to beg on harsh roads, and being paraded in religious ceremonies as a mere decorative prop, Manu led years with poor health. His complete blindness is a result of the neglect and malnourishment he endured in captivity.
Years took a toll on Manu and one day, his body could no longer take the weight of his suffering. Manu collapsed, unable to rise and ravaged with severe dehydration. It was only when our rescue team arrived that Manu’s tragic reality was revealed. He had been in lateral recumbency for more than 36 hours. His limbs were swollen, body was frail, and his tired gaze told a painful story of a mistreated life.
Manu needed urgent medical surveillance which could be provided under professional expertise at the Elephant Hospital Campus. Care and treatments are currently being given to the pachyderm for inflammation on his limbs and chronic septic wounds on his elbows. Oral medications, laser therapy and massages have been helping him regain strength and vitality. After facing a lifetime of being grossly overlooked, Manu is finally receiving the kind and affectionate attention he deserves.
