Field Researcher – Elephant Conservation Program

Position Overview
Wildlife SOS is seeking a dedicated and passionate Field Researcher to support its Elephant Conservation Program across India. This role involves critical, on-the-ground work focused on elephant protection, habitat monitoring, behavioural research, and strategies to reduce human-elephant conflict. The ideal candidate will be deeply committed to wildlife conservation, comfortable working in diverse field conditions, and capable of conducting rigorous research that contributes to species protection efforts.
Key Responsibilities
Field Research & Monitoring
• Conduct field surveys and ecological assessments in elephant habitats across multiple regions in India
• Monitor elephant populations, migration routes, and habitat conditions
• Collect, record, and analyze field data related to elephant behavior, health, and environmental pressures
• Support GPS tracking, camera trap studies, and habitat mapping initiatives
Behavioral Studies
• Observe and document elephant social structures, movement patterns, and interactions
• Assist in behavioral research projects to inform conservation and rehabilitation strategies
• Maintain accurate scientific records and prepare field reports
Human-Elephant Conflict Mitigation
• Work closely with local communities to identify and assess conflict zones
• Support awareness programs and conflict-reduction initiatives
• Collaborate with local authorities, forest departments, and stakeholders to implement mitigation measures
• Help develop practical, community-based conservation solutions
Reporting & Collaboration
• Prepare detailed research reports, presentations, and documentation
• Assist senior researchers and conservation teams with project planning and implementation
• Ensure compliance with ethical research standards and wildlife protection regulations
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Wildlife Biology, Zoology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Conservation Biology, or related field
• Prior experience in wildlife field research, conservation projects, or ecological studies preferred
• Strong understanding of elephant ecology, conservation challenges, and field methodologies
• Fluency in Hindi and English (spoken and written)
• Ability to travel extensively and work in remote field locations under challenging conditions
• Physical fitness and willingness to spend extended periods outdoors
• Proficiency in data collection tools, GPS, and field documentation

• Experience with GIS, remote sensing, or wildlife monitoring technologies
• Strong analytical and report-writing skills
