Mirinda, a beloved resident of the Wildlife SOS Van Vihar Bear Rescue Facility (VVBRF), has a story that resonates deeply with the mission of wildlife rescue and rehabilitation. Mirinda was a young bear when she was cruelly captured and exploited by the Kalandars, a nomadic tribe infamous for their inhumane treatment of bears. They subjected her to a brutal treatment where her muzzle was pierced and a rope was passed through it to effectively control her movements. Tugging the rope would force Mirinda to stand and perform on command, entertaining crowds in return for monetary gain. Adding to her misery, Mirinda was fed a cold drink also named “Mirinda”, further affecting her health as a sloth bear.

In 2008, Mirinda was rescued by Wildlife SOS in Nasik, Maharashtra, in a severely emaciated state. She was just six years old then, but was suffering from debilitating health conditions, and was brought to VVBRF for long-term care. Upon arrival, Mirinda was immediately placed under the expert care of Wildlife SOS’s dedicated team of veterinarians and caregivers. The transition from her previous life of torment to a secure and nurturing environment was a long and arduous process for Mirinda, who was given constant support by the organisation’s adept team. Mirinda was initially wary of her new surroundings. The wounds of her past reflected in her conduct when she hesitated to approach caregivers and veterinarians. With utmost patience, the team at Wildlife SOS began to provide her with healthy and attractive treats like dates and honey, making her feel welcomed and cared for.

Mirinda’s recovery has been nothing short of extraordinary. Her once painful muzzle healed, and she has grown into a robust and energetic bear, now approximately 22 years old. Her days are filled with activities that reflect joy and vitality. Mirinda is known for her love of climbing trees, which allows her to survey her surroundings from various vantage points. This behaviour not only showcases her strength, but also her keen observation skills as she watches the other bears in the facility.

A particularly touching aspect of Mirinda’s story is her close bond with her enclosure mate, Mali. Mirinda is fiercely protective of Mali and exhibits a strong maternal instinct towards her. When caregivers approach Mali with treats, Mirinda makes loud huffing noises to alert her friend and quickly moves to check on her. Her warmhearted behaviour traces back to her companionship with another rescued bear, Leo. After Leo’s passing, Mirinda’s friendship with Mali became strong, highlighting her ability to create deep emotional connections.

Along with Mali’s pleasant company, Mirinda’s diet has played a crucial role in her recovery and overall well-being as well. Unlike many of her fellow bears who have an affinity towards honey, Mirinda has a particular fondness for mangoes, making summer months joyful for her. Mangoes become a staple in her diet during that season, and also an integral component in her target training sessions. Mirinda eagerly responds to the given cues in anticipation of this cherished fruit as a reward. Her meals are planned meticulously with three daily servings: a morning porridge of mixed millets, a plate of fresh fruits around midday, and another generous helping of nutritious porridge in the evening.

Mirinda’s traumatic experiences prompted Wildlife SOS to provide her an enclosure that closely mimicked the natural environment for sloth bears. Her gigantic field is equipped with a variety of enrichments such as wooden platforms, which she uses both for play and rest. Mirinda enjoys perching on her platform and often engages in playful interactions with Mali, jumping up and down in gleeful antics. The field is also regularly stocked with dates and seasonal fruits like watermelon and mangoes, which Mirinda delightfully devours.

In addition to her psychological care, Mirinda’s physical needs are also well-managed. She is known for her calm demeanour, which makes her interactions with the veterinary team smooth and stress-free. During medical treatments, Mirinda remains composed and cooperative, readily presenting her paws and ears for inspection. This positive behaviour is a result of ongoing target training that is reinforced with treats, ensuring that her medical care is both effective and gentle.

Mirinda’s transformation from a tormented bear to a happy, active resident of VVBRF is a powerful reminder of the impact compassionate care has, and the difference that committed supporters can make. Her tale underscores the importance of wildlife rescues so that bears like Mirinda can live out their lives in safety and contentment.
