Wildlife SOS is involved with the rescuing and rehabilitating many different species of animals. What is less known, is that Wildlife SOS has several research projects that are being conducted to increase our understanding of wildlife and help us to figure out better ways to conserve biodiversity. Rinesh P P is a wildlife biologist who has worked for the organization since May 2012. We thought you would find it interesting to know what a wildlife biologist does for an organization like Wildlife SOS, so we recently conducted this interview.
How did you become interested in working for Wildlife SOS? There are two people who inspired me to want to work for Wildlife SOS. One was my teacher, Mr. Mavish Kumar and the other one was Baiju Raj who runs the Wildlife SOS elephant and bear rescue centers in Agra. Both played a pivotal role in helping me realize my dream to work for Wildlife SOS.
What is a typical day like for you? Let me start by saying that I love all days I can be around the animals. It is hard to say that there is a ‘typical’ day. However, I can say that they all start early and end late. One of the things I do is I observe and record the bear behavior of the rescued bears in Agra. I am also tracking SB01, a bear that we released back into the wild in July. Once everything is recorded I read my books before going to bed.
What is one of your most memorable days at Wildlife SOS? The day we released SB01 into the Suhelwa Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most memorably for me. This is a bear that had wandered into a village. We were able to capture the bear but we needed a safe place to release the bear. We were able to release the bear in Suhelwa with a radio collar. That was a wonderful experience to see it all come together.
What is something you think everybody should know about wildlife? They are speechless, they have the right to live and we should do all we can to protect them.
What else would you like people to know about you? My passion for research is with large mammals. I love the bears that I am studying. Each one is a unique character and I have learned so much from them.
Anything else you would like to say? It is an honor to work with these wild animals and I wish to spend the rest of my life trying to help them.
