MILLIE'S RESCUE STORY

Millie was the victim of an almost invisible menace. In 2021, forest officials spotted a wild bear limping near a rocky terrain in Karnataka’s Tumkur district. On realising that the bear  had fallen prey to a deadly snare, the Forest Department immediately contacted Wildlife SOS for assistance. In such cases, time is of the essence and hence our team did not waste any time to reach the location.

Geared with safety nets and tranquilising equipment the veterinary team, led by Dr. Arun A. Sha,rushed to her aid.  After immobilising  the bear using a sedative injection, the team removed the snare which was tightly wrapped around the bear’s right limb. The dangerous metal snare  had left a gangrenous wound and a bacterial infection. Identified as a female, the bear was also found to be severely dehydrated and malnourished. In dire need of medical attention, she was thus transferred to the Wildlife SOS Bannerghatta Bear Rescue Centre.

Millie, as she is called now, has come a long way since then and has shown considerable improvements. Previously unable to walk, she is now seen moving around her new enclosure. From being scared and weary of the caregivers, she now remains calm and co-operative during her treatment. Not just that, Millie has become more active and can be seen climbing and resting on the wooden platforms, as well as fiddling with treat-filled enrichment balls. All these are just positive signs of her recovery and shows her determination of not giving up despite going through such a tough time in the past.
