JAI'S RESCUE STORY

Sold as a commodity to an owner who treated him like a mode of transportation, Jai suffered for fifty years of his life, crossing state borders on his ailing legs and never resting. Jai had heavy spiked chains tightly clasped around his legs and was kept restrained for hours at a stretch, which further deteriorated his condition. Septic, untreated wounds filled with pus covered his legs and his toenails were cracked and overgrown. Jai’s towering structure appears emaciated and exhausted thus, recounting the tale of his abusive past.

Upon learning of his condition, the Rajasthan Forest Department sprung into action and seized the elephant on the grounds of abuse and cruelty inflicted on an animal which is granted the highest protection by the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. However, Jai’s rapidly debilitating condition and infected wounds needed immediate medical intervention which is why the Forest Department reached out to Wildlife SOS. Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities while providing for the ongoing care and treatment of eight bull elephants rescued from abuse, the Wildlife SOS Treatment Unit was the safe haven that Jai needed for long-term care. 

Wildlife SOS Rapid Response Team undertook a journey of over 550 km to reach Jai’s location where his condition was immediately stabilised and his wounds were tended to. After being safely loaded onto the Elephant Ambulance, with occasional stops to ensure that he had enough water and fresh fruits, Jai finally arrived at the Wildlife SOS Treatment Unit.

Jai suffers from seriously infected wounds on his limbs that were caused by brutal spiked chains and rope burns, saddle injuries along his spine, hip abscess on his left side and torn foot pads due to the exhausted routine of walking on hot tarmac. He will require long-term intensive treatment for his serious wounds and compromised psychological health.
