As elegant and resilient as the flower she is named after, Jasmine, the sloth bear residing at Wildlife SOS’s Agra Bear Rescue Facility (ABRF), has a presence that blooms with energy and spirit. Now, at 21 years of age, she continues to remain active and cheerful in the environment she was introduced to as an infant. Jasmine was a barely 5-months-old vulnerable cub when she was rescued from living a daunting future in captivity.

In an unjust turn of events, Jasmine was separated from her mother and plunged into the cruel world of becoming a ‘dancing’ bear. The little bear’s delicate muzzle was pierced for a rope to pass through it, the tugging of which would result in searing pain and a physical reaction that was assumed to be an entertaining act. Not only was the tiny cub going through immense physical torture, she was also suffering from the trauma of being separated from her mother. When she was rescued in 2003 by Wildlife SOS, Jasmine was found to be emaciated, and in desperate need of medical attention.

At ABRF, our team immediately began treatment for the painful wound Jasmine bore on her muzzle, a horrific proof of how cruel the ways were to tame a wild sloth bear. Neglect in captivity had also made her highly weak and malnourished. Understanding her fragile state led to dedicated efforts by her caregivers and the medical team to help her heal and recover. Jasmine’s physical sores and mental woes were treated with sensitive attention and expertise, and she received the love and nourishment she needed to rebuild her strength.

Care and affection brought Jasmine to a path where she experienced a healthy growth and joyful times. Being one of the senior bears at ABRF, her care regimen is mindfully tailored to address her needs and requirements as per the season.

For Jasmine to remain warm during the ongoing winters, extra layers of straw bedding have been added to her den as part of the winter management plan our team follows every year. More straw has been placed in her shallow pits so that she has cosy spots to snuggle into. Caregivers have noted how Jasmine has begun to use these pits for natural insulation, especially when cool winds blow over the centre. The hammock she climbs on to has been strategically placed in a sunny area, and has also become one of her favourite spots for relaxation.

Jasmine has always been a curious bear and she delightfully explores her environment. This includes digging for insects and termites to snack on, and playing with enrichments like honey-coated balls and a rolling barrel feeder filled with shredded coconut and dates. These activities encourage her natural instincts and behaviour, and keep her mentally stimulated.

As part of her geriatric care, the medical team performs regular medical check-ups to monitor Jasmine’s overall well-being. Jasmine cooperates well during these examinations, since her caregivers practise target training sessions with her using positive reinforcements. The wise ursine always responds to different cues that help the medical team to conduct examinations, such as inspections of the chest and abdomen. Her quick responses reflect the close bond and confidence she shares with her caregivers, who reward her with tasty treats to keep her motivated during these training sessions.

Jasmine’s story is a true example of resilience and spirit. From a fragile, weak and traumatised cub to a lively and spirited senior, she has overcome immense adversity to enjoy a life filled with care and dignity.

As the team at Wildlife SOS ensures her well being through the years, Jasmine’s journey continues to inspire all of us. Her vibrant personality reminds us of the difference our focussed efforts are making to animals found in distress.By supporting Wildlife SOS, you contribute to the ongoing care of sloth bears like Jasmine, helping them live the lives they deserve.
