At Wildlife SOS, we aim to create meaningful connections between people and wildlife through various educational and awareness programmes. From leopards to elephants, reptiles to sloth bears, our initiatives not only engage local communities, but also foster a deeper understanding among diverse groups, including students, forest officials, and villagers, about the importance of conservation and coexistence with wildlife. By sharing knowledge, we nurture a stronger bond between humans and the incredible species we share our world with.
In the month of September 2024, we had the pleasure of organising several impactful awareness programmes with students and local residents across the country to inspire a love for nature and a deeper appreciation of our rich biodiversity.
Leopard Conflict Mitigation Workshop at MLRC
On September 3, 2024, Wildlife SOS, in collaboration with the Delhi Forest Department, hosted a workshop at the Manikdoh Leopard Rescue Centre (MLRC). Approximately 10 forest officials participated in the training, guided by Wildlife SOS Project Manager, Mr. Mahendra Dhore. The session equipped participants with essential skills to manage potential conflicts with leopards
As part of the centre’s tour, the trainees explored leopard enclosures and learned about their scientific management in captive care. They were also introduced to medical equipment used during treatments, such as a laser therapy kit, portable X-ray machine, and anaesthesia kit. Additionally, they gained practical experience with various rescue tools, including snare poles, safety nets, net guns, tranquilliser guns, and anti-scratching jackets. These tools are critical for conducting challenging leopard rescue operations.
Wildlife Awareness Programme at Narayangaon, Maharashtra
One of our standout events took place in Maharashtra’s Kolhe Mala in Narayangaon, where around 150 locals gathered to learn about living harmoniously with wildlife. Our focus was on leopards—beautiful yet elusive creatures that often evoke curiosity and concern.
Through engaging discussions, our team shared insights on leopard behaviour and habitat, helping the community understand how to safely navigate areas where these animals roam. It was heartening to see the locals eager to learn about their wild neighbours and the vital role they play in the ecosystem. This enriching event took place on September 24, 2024.
Training Event for Uttarakhand Forest Department
A training session was held for around 40 officials from the Uttarakhand Forest Department, led by Dr. S. Ilayaraja, Deputy Director of Veterinary Services at Wildlife SOS. The event took place on September 30, 2024, and focused on conservation and management, with a special emphasis on sloth bears.
During the session, trainees explored the Agra Bear Rescue Facility (ABRF), learning about the challenges sloth bears face and the best practices for their rescue and rehabilitation. Dr. Ilayaraja shared valuable insights into our state-of-the-art medical facilities and health management protocols for the bears.
Workshop for Female Forest Officers on Wildlife Conservation and Management
On September 30, 2024, a training workshop for 40 female Range Forest Officers (RFOs) from the Uttarakhand Forest Department was conducted by Mr. Harendra Singh, Head Coordinator of Wildlife SOS’s Visitor and Volunteer Programme. The workshop aimed to empower participants with crucial knowledge and practical skills in forest conservation.
The workshop included a visit to the Agra Bear Rescue Facility (ABRF), where the RFOs gained a firsthand understanding of the care provided to rehabilitated sloth bears. They engaged in discussions on wildlife management challenges and learned effective strategies for promoting conservation efforts within their communities.
With a focus on learning and collaboration, this workshop reinforced the importance of female leadership in wildlife protection and in safeguarding Uttarakhand’s natural landscapes.
