ARTHUR'S RESCUE STORY

In November 2019, the Wildlife SOS anti-poaching unit “Forest Watch” intercepted intelligence that a group of wildlife traffickers were hiding with five sloth bears in a remote forested area near the Indo-Nepal border. Based on the intelligence provided by Forest Watch, the traffickers were nabbed by the Jharkhand Forest Department and police officials. All the five bears, including Arthur, had their teeth smashed and muzzles pierced so they could be used for street performances. But timely intervention helped the bears escape a lifetime of torture and they were eventually transferred to the Wildlife SOS Agra Bear Rescue Facility.

The bears were named after the Weasley family from the famous ‘Harry Potter’ series. Upon their arrival, the bears were placed under  quarantine for detailed medical examination and screening. Following this, they were gradually settled into various enclosures for their long term recovery. Arthur adjusted to his new environment within a few short weeks. Arthur and Molly were the oldest among all the five bears, and due to the proximity of their age, got along really well. As a result, they also share the same enclosure and stay together. 

After having spent more than a few years under our care, these two bears have grown close not only to each other but also to their caregivers, living a happy and safe life.
