ARYA'S STORY

Arya’s daily routine was an exhausting one wherein she would walk on unnatural surfaces littered with shards of broken glass, stones and metal scraps everyday. Arya’s left eye suffered permanent and irreversible damage due to an earlier injury. As time passed, she started using her trunk to navigate through the busy streets. After learning about Arya’s deteriorating condition, Wildlife SOS sprung into action and amidst the COVID19 pandemic, Arya was safely brought to the Wildlife SOS Treatment Unit for treatment. She suffers from overgrown and cracked toenails and her foot pads are torn thin. Her loss of vision makes her slightly wary of her new surroundings. But the elephant care staff and our team of veterinarians are working very hard to ensure that she is comfortable and at ease.

The veterinarians are going to begin intensive foot care treatment for Arya, and a nutritious diet will be planned for her that will allow her to gain strength and build her immunity to guard her from infections. At present, she likes munching on green fodder, watermelons, cucumbers, pumpkins and apples, and is not a fussy eater. Arya has mud beds in her enclosure to allow her to lean and rest against them for support. She is also often spotted picking up the soft mud in her trunk and playing with it. Arya being a completely blind elephant requires a lot of psychological assistance to grow completely comfortable at her new home and our team is working diligently to achieve this!
