Dugongs
The Indian dugong or seacow is considered an endangered species and has been given the highest level of legal protection. However, the Indian dugong that once thrived in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands continues to struggle for survival despite its protected status.
There are multiple factors that threaten the dugongs’ survival including poaching, collisions with boats, and environmental and natural disasters. Currently, Wildlife SOS is helping to protect and conserve the remaining dugongs by recruiting and training volunteers to work alongside local wildlife officers with anti-poaching efforts.
Our hope is to expand the current efforts to include creating protecting the sea grass beds from being destroyed, create a “No Fishing Zone” and a dugong information center that raises awareness.
